Graphic design has been so much a part of my creative life from the 1970’s to the present. I love the control it offers and the communication it provides when done well. I have designed everything from print identity materials to logos and window signage, executed brand campaigns and then onto social media with every kind of digital design that is needed for web design and all the other social media tools.

SOCIAL MEDIA TRIES TO IGNORE GRAPHIC DESIGN

It appeared at first that the advent of social media would eliminate the need for visual tools in this new electronic world of code and words. It even seemed that it might stay that way. Then a new program came on the scene, Pinterest. It was an overnight success. In fact, Pinterest skyrocketed to the top of the charts and obliterated the misconception that there was no room or need for visual data. Not only did Pinterest continue to grow and experience unprecedented success but it also convinced every other social media program that the visual was essential. Thus digital design was born and its future, as part of the social media partnership between verbal and visual, was secured.

THE MARRIAGE BETWEEN SOCIAL MEDIA AND DIGITAL DESIGN

Pinterest was the pioneer and the champion. Everyone else followed suit. It even became possible to post images on tweets. Clearly visual information is more attractive, more digestible and more memorable. Below are some blog posts I wrote about the advent and early days of Pinterest coincident with the shotgun wedding between verbal and visual components.
