Natural Painkillers in Your Kitchen

natural painkillers

These are kitchen ingredients that we consume normally as food, condiments and teas. But did you know, that when used properly, they can also be natural painkillers?

Ultimately, one may need to seek medical attention for the cause of the pain. But for pain relief, they can be very helpful. Let’s take a look at some of them in detail.

FOOD ITEMS

Some common kitchen ingredients that are natural painkillers, too

NATURAL PAINKILLERS IN YOUR KITCHEN:
OATS can be used to end endometrial pain.
PEPPERMINT can be used to relax sore muscles.
GRAPES are good for giving the back some TLC.
HORSERADISH can help heal sinus problems.
GINGER is good for muscle and joint pain.
CLOVES relieve toothache pain (until you get that emergency dental appointment).
GARLIC can erase earaches.
TUMERIC is good for chronic pain.

CONDIMENTS

Some common kitchen ingredients that are natural painkillers, too

kitchen painkillers
good for an earache
In looking over the above (fairly) common kitchen ingredients, I have to admit that I am not sure how these foods are supposed to be applied to work their magic. Do you stick the garlic in your ear to ease the ache? I doubt it. Do you eat these ingredients, make teas or poultices out of them, or eat them raw or cooked?

Clearly more research needs to be done to see how these ingredients are applied and how they work as natural painkillers. I do know from experience that sucking on some cloves does relieve a toothache temporarily. I have used ginger tea for an upset stomach but do not know about joint pain.

natural painkillers
good for the back
I am glad to hear that grapes are good for the back. I love grapes. But I hope the application does not involve putting the grapes on my back and then crushing them the way wine is made.

alleviates chronic pain
Tumeric has gained attention lately as a condiment that has all kinds of healing properties. It is supposed to be good for stiff joints. But the amount that needs to be consumed for it to have any effect is far greater than one can eat. Therefore it supposedly need to be taken in supplement form or by putting the powder in a capsule and swallowing it. I would still rather eat Indian food since it is a frequent ingredient in the dishes I find delicious.

A GRAIN OF SALT
All this information must be taken with a grain of salt. No, I do not know what adding salt would do. It is a manner of speaking. It means to not take this too literally or seriously without knowing what you are doing. I still can’t figure the garlic/earache relationship. But there is a wives tale about hanging a clove of garlic around a child’s neck to prevent them from getting sick in school. I am just not sure if the garlic actually keeps germs away. Or if the smell keeps all the other children away thus keeping the germs away.

natural painkillers
relaxes muscles
Speaking of smells, the last item on our list is peppermint. It smells great and makes a tummy soothing tea that can’t be beat. In fact, its fragrance is used in many food and dental items.

IN CONCLUSION
In all seriousness, there are some wonderfully helpful food items that can act as natural painkillers and even help heal us. (They can even look nice as decoration like the mint shown here. I also love the color of tumeric. It reminds me of autumn). But to stay on subject, let me end by saying that just like any prescription, one needs to read the directions, using as prescribed. So, good luck, feel better and send me your comments in the morning.

Prevention or Mutilation?

Angelina Jolie on the cover of People Magazine

Prevention or mutilation? This is the question being asked. Angelina Jolie’s dramatic decision to have a double mastectomy as cancer prevention, rather than because of the existence of the disease, has the holistic pundits up in arms.

It also begs these questions. What is prevention? What is treatment? What is unnecessary or mutilation? This information filled video gives the holistic perspective on the ramifications of such a severe decision regarding prevention or mutilation.

Here is an article from People Magazine about her story. It does not go into any medical details or explanations for her decision.

Here is another People Magazine article that sheds no further light on the topic. The only additional information is that she plans to remove her ovaries as well. Is this prevention or mutilation?

This New York Times op-ed piece sheds some light on the story. The piece is written by Angelina Jolie, herself, and explains both her decision and a bit of the process.

The Pink Lotus Breast Center is mentioned as the place where she was treated. I wonder how many of the women who decide to follow her example would have access to such luxurious facilities and care?

Vegan Chicken Soup

VEGAN CHICKEN SOUP: Relief in minutes

Vegan chicken soup in progress. Takes minutes to make, tastes great and works wonders.
Vegan chicken soup in progress. Takes minutes to make, tastes great and works wonders.
My husband just turned 67 yesterday. You’d never know it by his appearance. He has the face of a kid, well a fifty something kid. He is actually in school preparing for a new career. You may wonder why I am mentioning all of this. It sets the stage for this post, ‘vegan chicken soup’.

Well, my husband woke up sneezing and tired, after a full day of school yesterday. I had to do something to help him feel better. So I went to my mental medicine cabinet of folk remedies.

It is amazing how much money people spend in the drug store for all sorts of patent medicines when the traditional remedies cost pennies and work wonders. Hot water is the base of almost every remedy including the patent, over the counter cold cures.

I filled the tea kettle and let the water get good and hot while I grated some ginger and squeezed some lemon juice from organic lemons. I went to my medicine cabinet (the hand painted on that was my grandmother’s jelly cabinet) to get the echinacea/golden seal drops.

You pretty much have the process of the recipe from my description. Here is a list of the ingredients.

• At least two cups of hot water, good and hot, not necessarily boiling

• 1 inch of fresh (preferably organic) ginger, grated or cut into tiny pieces

• the juice of 1/2 lemon (preferably organic)

• a dropper full of echinacea/goldenseal liquid extract (drops) either with alcohol or alcohol free depending on your preference

By the time the water is good and hot, all the other ingredients are prepared. Drink at least two cups, rest (if possible) stay warm, eat alkaline foods and feel better soon.

FUTURE TOPICS:
• What is vegan food
• my hand painted medicine cabinet
• an alkaline diet

Send in your questions and suggestions. I am eager to hear what you think and what you want to know. Just keep one thing in mind. This post is for informational purposes only. I do not diagnose or prescribe. See a professional health practitioner for any concerns you might have.

The Healing Icon Is the Pansy Flower

a box of flower remedies in blue bottles

I choose the pansy flower as the Healing Icon. Why?

In the universe of flower essences, also knows as flower remedies, energy medicine, vibrational medicine as well as other similar terms, all part of the HEALING section of this weblog, the pansy flower (vibration) is considered a most powerful healing tool.

While I was working on the beginnings of Alison*s Heirloom Projects, I would tire easily and get sick from the intensity of my attempts to manifest the Healing  information for Alison*s Heirloom Projects. I found that I needed something to keep me healthy, sustain my energy and strengthen my perseverance. Therefore, I turned to pansy.

Coincidently, I am drawn to pansies, the flower, as well. In the spring time, I constantly have to stop and look at the pansies where ever I go. Many of my stationery and accessory items also have pansy images on them. I did not plan it that way. I am just drawn to them and other people give me gifts with things that have pansies on them.

Since this flower appealed to me both visually and vibrationally, I decided to do some research about pansy. Part of that research involved trying the remedy itself. At first I did not know if it even existed since the sets of flower remedies I had did not include pansy.

I did find it in ‘flower remedy’ form from a small company in New England. I used it to my satisfaction. Since I have taken up the HEALING project again and am run down again, I am going to resume taking this remedy. I still have some left. But even if I had run out, my current research has revealed many companies that now carry it.

I know I have jumped ahead and perhaps have left some of you behind. So bear with me. This post refers not only to the HEALING aspect of Alison*s Art but also to the healing studies section of Alison*s Heirloom Projects. Plenty more will be revealed in future blog posts and on the pages of this weblog. If you can’t wait, there is also an abundance of sources to choose from for your reading pleasure.

Your questions and thoughts are welcome in the blog post comments area. Please keep in mind that this post is for informational purposes only. I do not prescribe healing tools, vibrational or otherwise. If you wish to try anything, please seek a qualified practitioner.

Seedling Ventures

seedling ventures

Being creative, passionate about my interests and entrepreneurial have been great fertilizer and nurturance for my seedling ventures in ART | FOOD | HEALING.

This new blog and website are the home, playground and evolutionary laboratory for my creative entrepreneurial work. This is the accumulation of a body of work spanning approximately thirty years to date. It is the archive of my past work, present efforts and legacy for the future.

There has been a transformation from Alison*s Art into Alison*s Heirloom Projects. It has taken place in all of the three disciplines. The heirloom projects allow for the preservation of the original seedling ventures. They also provide a framework for growth, exploration and addition value.

The current ‘social media’ technology is ideal for preserving the original ventures as well as exploring the heirloom projects. It is a perfect laboratory for breathing new growth into the original seedling ventures. Social media also gives the heirloom projects lots of room to grow.

In this blog and website, you can look forward to lots of archeological digs. You can also look forward to exploration of new territory. Your comments, suggestions and questions are always welcome.
